Once (and again, and again)
It's been a while since I have gotten so obsessed with a song, or set of songs, that I would listen to them over and over and have to buy the album, or more songs from iTunes right away. But it happened last night.
It actually all started about a month or two ago when I went to see a movie, I can't even recall which one anymore, and there was a preview for a movie called Once. I was intrigued by it mostly because the music in the preview seemed to be sung by the stars themselves and that the music was so phenomenal. It finally came to my town and I meant to go see it, but missed it by a few days. Then earlier this week I was reminded of it again when someone sent me a song from the movie and I couldn't stop listening to it. That pretty much sold me. I went to iTunes and downloaded a number of other songs from the movie album last night, loved them all.
The music reminds me very much of Damien Rice in its melancholy folk nature as well as its dual male and female vocals, not to mention the Irish singer. The singer is Glen Hansard, former leader of the Irish band The Frames, and the girl is a young Czech singer-songwriter named Marketa Irglova. If you enjoy Damien Rice, or any beautiful but sad folk music, you definitely need to hear some of their songs....and see the movie.
I haven't seen it yet, but I found it playing in town now that I have moved and will be seeing it tonight. I can't wait.
You can listen to some of the music on the movie's MySpace page.
Or download the song "Falling Slowly" from The Look Back.
Labels: folk, Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova, Once, The Swell Season
